Don Resolution Regarding A Southern States High Performance Network Grid Sponsored by Governor Mark R. Warner of Virginia To Be Considered via Mail Ballot September 4, 2002 Washington, DC Whereas, the southeastern United States is home to more than one third of the population of the United States; and Whereas, the region is substantially under-represented in the distribution of total federal expenditures for research and development; and, Whereas the Southern Governors Association has expressed a goal of ensuring that the South is advantaged relative to e-science and the establishment of advanced networking capability within the region that will enhance its science capacity and improve the competitive position of the South in the national and global economy; and, Whereas the creation and expansion of an advanced networking infrastructure offers the region unprecedented opportunities for communication of information for education and research, public health and safety, homeland security, and other purposes; and, Whereas the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) has proposed the development of creative public-private partnerships with state governments, its higher education community and well-positioned corporate partners to gain access to, and potential ownership of, high-performance networking assets, thereby creating a high performance network grid; and, Whereas the Southern Governors Association has proposed linking the regions existing and emerging telecommunications intensive initiatives to create a robust state-of-the art, ubiquitous networking infrastructure that is cost effective; now, therefore be it Resolved, that the Southern Governors Association endorses SURAs proposal to create a high performance network grid in support of Aligning State Government and Higher Education to Strengthen the Science Capacity and Economic Competitiveness of the South; and be it further Resolved, that SGA and SURA staff work together to ensure the compatibility of the high performance computing and networking technologies of the higher education community and state government and to leverage them to improve the science capacity and economic competitiveness of the region. --- You are currently subscribed to northern-tier1 as: ray.ford@umontana.edu To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-northern-tier1-347856I@lists.services.wisc.edu
