GRNOC at Indiana University; Why we cut grass

Dave Jent
Director of U.Indiana NOC and Chair of Internet2’s Architecture and Operations Advisory Committee

Ten years ago Indiana University submitted a bid to manage the new Abilene Network that UCAID was developing. We had a new VP for IT and he wanted IU to develop network management services, what a starting point that turned out to be. Over time the GRNOC has developed process, procedures, staff and tools that allow us to provide services to additional networks with incremental effort.

This non technical talk will review some of the history about how the
GRNOC was developed, look at the current operation and attempt to strike up a discussion about the future of R&E networking.

The Other Northern Tier: Filling the Voids

David Todd
CIO, University of Vermont

If you look at the national research and education network backbone map, you'll see two voids:  one the Northern Tier Consortium is working to fill, and one in northern New England.  In the past two years, several groups have been considering how to fill the New England void, too.  This session will review the factors that are motivating development of a regional network that includes northern New England, the problems that have inhibited that development so far, and the opportunities to complete that development.  Suggestions for ways to encourage and facilitate this development -- and lessons learned by the NTNC -- will be solicited in the discussion.
