Membership/Organization

The NTNC started as a loose knit, informal group interested in networking infrastructure in the northwestern area of the US, but is now in the process of becoming a more formal group, with dues-paying member entities, officers and operating rules, and the ability to represent the collective interests of its members in activities related to networking and network infrastructure.  The entities which have expressed some interest, to the extent of participating in one or more of the formational meetings include Internet2 members and other educational and governmental organizations in Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Organization Startup

NTNC is now “bootstrapping” itself into being through the process below.

  1. [DONE] Form a loose collection of interested parties to determine if such a group has a purpose.

  2. [DONE] Consider options on how to become a more formal organization. Select one -- a formally recognized “Project” under the auspices of Internet2.  Set up an initial Executive Committee to work on organizational details described below. Set up initial Technical Working Committee to begin looking at technical and networking details.

  3. [In progress] Membership and Operating Rules. Formalize official agreements through a two step process with "founding members."

    1. Letter of Agreement. Have each potential member submit a formal “Letter of Agreement”
    2. Memo of Understanding – Development. Have tentative members approve a formal statement of mission, goals, purpose, operating rules, etc., giving an official NTNC Membership Memo of Understanding.
    3. Memo of Understanding – Formal Commitment. Tentative members become official (founding) members by signing the Membership MOU.

  4. [In progress] Relationship with Internet2. Formalize the official agreement with Internet2 through a two step process:

    1. Semi-Formal Relationship.  An exchange of letters presents the offer from Internet2 to host the NTNC as a “Project”, and expresses NTNC’s tentative acceptance of that offer.
    2. Formal Relationship: Once NTNC is “official” (i.e., with members that have signed the Membership MOU), the NTNC members will approve an official Memo of Understanding formalizing the relationship with Internet2 (an I2 MOU).
